Saxifraga stolonifera, commonly known as Strawberry Begonia, Strawberry Geranium, or Mother of Thousands, is a charming and versatile houseplant. Despite its common names, it is neither a true begonia nor a geranium. Native to Asia, this plant is admired for its attractive foliage, delicate flowers, and easy propagation.

  • Appearance: The Strawberry Begonia features round, hairy leaves with scalloped edges. The upper surface of the leaves is green with silver veins, while the underside is a reddish-purple. The plant produces delicate white flowers with yellow centers and long, trailing stolons (runners) that develop baby plants at the tips.
  • Height: When grown indoors, Saxifraga stolonifera typically reaches a height of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm), with the trailing stolons extending up to 18 inches (45 cm) or more.
  • Growth Habit: This plant has a spreading and trailing habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets or as a ground cover in container arrangements.

Care Guide:

Light Requirements:

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Strawberry Begonia thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning or late afternoon sun but avoid intense midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Low Light: It can adapt to lower light conditions, though growth may be slower, and the leaves may lose some of their vibrant coloration.

Watering:

  • Moderate Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: This plant prefers higher humidity levels. Mist the leaves regularly or place a humidity tray nearby to maintain adequate moisture, especially in dry indoor environments.

Temperature:

  • Optimal Range: The ideal temperature range for Saxifraga stolonifera is between 15°C to 24°C (60°F to 75°F). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) and protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil:

  • Well-Draining Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of peat moss, perlite, and regular potting soil works well to provide the necessary drainage and aeration.

Fertilising:

  • Balanced Fertiliser: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Regular Pruning: Prune the plant to remove any yellow or dead leaves and to maintain its shape. Trim the stolons if you prefer a more compact look or want to propagate new plants.
  • Repotting: Repot the Strawberry Begonia every 1 to 2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is one size larger and refresh the potting mix.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Common Pests: Watch for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Disease Prevention: Ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases. Yellowing leaves can be a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.

Special Care Tips:

  • Propagation by Runners: Saxifraga stolonifera is easy to propagate via its stolons. Simply place the baby plants that form at the tips of the runners in soil or water until they develop roots, then pot them up.
  • Leaf Cleaning: Dust can accumulate on the leaves, hindering photosynthesis. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them clean and healthy.
  • Avoid Draughts: Keep the plant away from draughty windows or doors, as cold air can cause stress and damage to the leaves.

By following these care guidelines, your Saxifraga stolonifera (Strawberry Begonia) will thrive and add a touch of delicate beauty to your home. Its attractive foliage, charming flowers, and easy propagation make it a delightful and low-maintenance addition to any indoor garden.
